Your Team Took DiSC. Now What?

Your team completed Everything DiSC®. People learned about their styles, recognized familiar patterns and gained a better understanding of their colleagues.

That’s valuable. But the real test comes when there’s a consequential business decision to be made: a major investment, a strategic tradeoff, an important personnel issue or a risk management issue. Decisions like these often need to be made quickly, with incomplete information and amongst competing priorities.

This is where working styles can have a direct impact on business performance. And where failing to understand and leverage those differences can become costly.

Our Point of View: DiSC Should Improve Decisions, Not Just Relationships

Everything DiSC helps people understand how they naturally approach challenges, interact with others and respond under pressure.

But awareness alone doesn’t improve business performance. The value comes from using those differences deliberately.

Consider a leadership team evaluating a major strategic investment.

Someone with a strong D tendency may push for a decision, recognizing the cost of delay. A colleague with a C tendency may challenge the assumptions and identify risks others have missed. Someone with an i tendency may see opportunities and help build enthusiasm for a specific direction. A team member with an S tendency may recognize concerns about execution and the impact on team dynamics.

Each perspective can strengthen the decision.

But those same tendencies, taken too far, can also undermine it. Urgency can become recklessness. Analysis can become paralysis. Enthusiasm can obscure practical concerns. A desire for harmony can prevent productive disagreement.

These aren’t inevitable behaviors, and DiSC doesn’t predict who will make good decisions. It helps leaders recognize tendencies that may influence how people contribute, particularly under pressure.

When Working Styles Aren’t Managed, the Business Pays

We’ve all experienced meetings where the most confident voice carries the day, even when someone else voices a legitimate concern.

Or where everyone appears to agree, but the decision begins unraveling as soon as people leave the room.

Sometimes the team moves too quickly and overlooks a serious risk. Other times, the discussion goes on so long that frustration ensues with no closure.

These aren’t simply communication problems. They’re decision-making problems with real business consequences: misallocated resources, missed opportunities, slower or no execution and strategies that fail to deliver.

The strongest leaders don’t seek agreement at the expense of good judgment. They encourage productive debate, recognize when an important perspective is missing and know when enough discussion is enough.

Putting DiSC to Work Where It Matters

The next step after a DiSC workshop is to apply that understanding to real business challenges.

Before your next consequential decision, ask:

  • What matters most? Establish the strategic criteria before individual preferences begin influencing the discussion.
  • Whose perspectives are we missing? Consider which working styles are dominant and whose insights may risk being unheard.
  • Are we challenging the decision or one another? Make room for disagreement even if it is uncomfortable for some in the room.
  • Who decides, and when? Be explicit about accountability and when discussion must give way to action.

Afterward, revisit the process. What strengthened the decision? What slowed it down? What did the team miss?

Most importantly, leaders must model these behaviors themselves. A team won’t challenge assumptions if the leader treats questions as resistance. And different perspectives won’t improve decisions if the outcome was effectively determined before the conversation began.

The Real Return on DiSC

A DiSC workshop can help a team understand its differences. But that is the starting point.

The real return comes when leaders turn that awareness into better judgment, more productive debate, clearer accountability and stronger execution.

Because ultimately, the cost of failing to leverage different working styles isn’t simply a team that doesn’t work well together. It’s a business that makes poorer decisions than it should.
